Safety First: When Not to DIY
Stop and call a professional if you smell burning plastic, see scorched wires, hear loud grinding metal, smell gas (for gas furnaces/dual fuel), or find standing water near electrical equipment.
Also stop if the breaker trips repeatedly after reset. Repeated trips mean a fault — not a nuisance.
Rule of thumb If a step requires opening electrical panels beyond a simple breaker reset, or handling refrigerant, that is pro territory.
1–3: Thermostat Checks Most People Skip
Confirm the thermostat is in Cool, not Heat or Off. Set the temperature at least 3 degrees below room temperature. Set fan to Auto (On can circulate warm air and confuse the diagnosis).
Replace batteries if the display is dim or blank. For Wi-Fi thermostats, check that the app shows the equipment is online and not in a schedule hold that fights you.

4–5: Breakers, Switches, and the Outdoor Disconnect

6–7: Filter and Airflow (The #1 Summer Culprit)
A clogged filter is the most common homeowner-fixable cause of weak cooling and frozen coils. Pull the filter and hold it to a light. If you cannot see light through it, replace it.
Open supply registers in occupied rooms. Do not close most of the house "to force air" into one room — that raises static pressure and can freeze the coil.
Listen for the indoor blower. If the outdoor unit runs but the indoor fan does not, you likely have an air handler/furnace issue, not just "low refrigerant."
8–9: Outdoor Unit Visual Checks
On a cooling call, the outdoor fan should typically spin and the unit should sound active (not silent). If the fan is still and the compressor is humming loudly, shut it off — that can be a failed capacitor/fan motor situation that overheats the compressor.
Clear leaves, grass, and cottonwood from around the cabinet. Keep 2+ feet of clearance. Do not spray water into electrical components.
10–11: Ice on Lines and Water Around the System
Ice on the copper lines or indoor coil means stop cooling mode. Turn the system Off and run Fan Only to thaw if safe. Icing is usually airflow or refrigerant related — running through ice can damage the compressor.
Water around the indoor unit often means a clogged condensate drain. Many systems shut down on a float switch. Clearing drains can be DIY for some homeowners, but if you are unsure, call — water damage costs more than a service visit.
12: Still Not Cooling? What to Tell the Technician
Write down: thermostat settings, which breakers you reset, filter condition, whether outdoor fan spins, any ice/water, strange noises, and how long since the last maintenance.
