Why Micro is different

Most Johnston County towns are heat pump towns. Micro isn't. The county assessor's heating field for the 180 homes with a Micro mailing address reads:

Heating type (county assessor)Micro
Forced air, ducted (furnace)49%
Heat pump36%
Forced air, not ducted11%
Baseboard2%
None listed2%

Compare that with Archer Lodge, where heat pumps are 80%. Here about half the homes have a furnace with ducts, and about one in nine has forced-air heat with no ducts, like a floor furnace, wall furnace or through-wall heater.

The Census says what fuel they burn: about 80% electricity and 20% propane, with no utility-gas homes counted. So a furnace in Micro is almost always electric or propane.

The houses: mostly mid-century

Micro is compact. 98% of those 180 homes are inside town limits. The county's median year built is about 1962, and the decades show it:

  • 1900s–1950s: 77 homes
  • 1960s: 38, the single busiest decade
  • 1970s–2000s: 33
  • 2010s and 2020s: 32 newer homes

The county also lists 22 duplex/triplex properties, a high share for a town this size, plus 10 double-wides and 4 townhouses. The Census estimate of manufactured housing is higher, about 21% of units. The Census counts housing units and the county counts tax parcels, so the numbers differ.

What that means at service time

  • 1960s ducts. Duct systems from that era were often sized for heat only. When central AC was added later, the same ducts may move too little air for cooling, which can freeze the coil or leave back rooms warm. See ductwork.
  • Propane furnaces. Before a burner repair we check the tank level and supply valve. Your propane company owns the tank side; we handle the furnace. Our furnace blowing cold air guide covers what you can safely check first.
  • Floor and wall furnaces. These are serviceable, but venting and clearances matter. If you want to move to a ducted heat pump, ask us to price it.
  • Duplex rentals. Landlords with two or three units on one parcel can have us look at all of them in one visit.

Permit and utility facts

Micro is one of the Johnston County towns without its own inspections department. Johnston County's process is a zoning/land-use permit from the town first, then a mechanical permit from Johnston County Building Inspections (Land Use Center, 309 E. Market St, Smithfield, 919-989-5060). HVAC change-outs need one. The county's FAQ says permits aren't filed online yet and a simple trade permit can go by email. We file it on replacements.

We couldn't confirm Micro's electric provider from a town or utility source. A third-party guide says Duke Energy, and South River EMC, Tri-County EMC and Wake Electric all have some territory in Johnston County. No natural-gas provider is confirmed for Micro either.

We have not confirmed it, and the Census counts no Micro homes heating with utility gas. About 1 in 5 homes heat with propane; nearly all the rest are electric.

Who permits HVAC work in Micro?

Johnston County Building Inspections in Smithfield issues the mechanical permit after the Town of Micro handles zoning/land use. Micro doesn't have its own inspections department.

Who supplies electricity in Micro?

Not confirmed. Only a third-party guide names Duke Energy; we found no town or utility page that says. The name on your bill is the answer.

Have you done jobs in Micro?
