Same house, new address
On February 10, 2025, NC 42 West became Veterans Parkway, from the Wake/Johnston county line to the US 70 Business underpass. US 70 Business became Clayton Boulevard at the same time. The goal, per the Town of Clayton, was to avoid confusion with the new I-42. About 500 homes and businesses got new addresses; for example, 555 NC 42 West became 555 Veterans Parkway.
For your heating and cooling, the change shows up in paperwork:
- Permit history. Earlier permits and inspection records for your house may be filed under "NC 42 W." When we look up past work or a previous installation, we search both.
- Equipment warranty registration. If your system was registered under the old address, keep a copy. Manufacturers usually match on model and serial number, but having both addresses on file avoids questions during a claim.
- Service records. If you've had work done before the rename, tell us the old address when you call so we can match it.
Who permits your HVAC work on Veterans Parkway
Town status changes parcel by parcel along this road. Of the 49 homes we matched in Johnston County records:
| Clayton ETJ, 53% | Town of Clayton |

| Inside Clayton limits, 6% | Town of Clayton |
| West end, past the county line | Wake County Permit and Inspections |
Clayton's inspections FAQ requires a mechanical permit to install, replace or repair heating and air systems. The county lists HVAC change-outs among permitted work and accepts simple trade permits by email. We check your parcel and file with whichever office applies.
The homes along the road
Veterans Parkway isn't a subdivision, and we haven't confirmed any subdivisions that sit directly on it. The 49 homes in county records have a median build year of 1987, spread from 1900 to 2016: 10 from the 1980s, 10 from the 2000s, 6 from the 1960s, 5 from the 1990s, and smaller groups from every decade back to the early 1900s. Nearly all are single-family; there's one double-wide.
The assessor splits them almost evenly between ducted forced air (53%, usually a gas furnace with central AC) and heat pumps (47%). That's a higher furnace share than most of Clayton's newer neighborhoods, and it means we ask "gas or heat pump?" first on every call from this road. Piedmont Natural Gas serves the Clayton area. We haven't confirmed the electric provider here; the town's public power and Duke Energy Progress both serve parts of Clayton, so check your bill.
