The same records list the heating type for each house: 80% heat pump, 18% ducted forced air (usually a furnace with central AC), and about 1% forced air without ducts. The Census American Community Survey agrees from a different angle: about 86% of occupied homes in Archer Lodge heat with electricity, 4% with propane, 3% with fuel oil or kerosene and only 2% with utility gas.
What that means for the system in your yard
- Many 1990s houses are on their second or third outdoor unit. If yours still has the original condenser from a 1997 or 2001 build, it is far past a normal service life, and repair-or-replace becomes a real question. Our repair vs. replace guide walks through it.

- Older original ductwork. Thirty-year-old flex duct sags, tears and leaks. If one bedroom never keeps up, the cause is often the duct run, not the equipment. More on our ductwork page.
Manufactured homes are a real share here
The county lists 90 double-wide and 6 single-wide manufactured homes with Archer Lodge addresses. The Census estimate for the town is higher, at about 17% of housing units; the Census counts housing units and the county counts parcels, so the two measure differently. These homes usually have a downflow air handler or furnace in a hall closet and ducts running under the floor, so we check the belly-board duct connections and the crossover duct on double-wides when airflow is weak.
Permits: town first, then the county
Archer Lodge does not run its own inspections department. Johnston County lists it among the towns that rely on Johnston County Building Inspections (Land Use Center, 309 E. Market St, Smithfield, 919-989-5060). The county's steps:
- The town issues a zoning/land-use permit.
- The county issues the mechanical permit. "Mechanical change outs (HVAC)" are on the county's list of work that needs one.
- A county inspector checks the finished install.
The county FAQ says permits can't be applied for online yet; a simple trade permit can be emailed to the inspections office. When we replace a system, we handle the permit paperwork.
Power and fuel
The Town of Archer Lodge names Duke Energy as its electric supplier. Electric co-ops also have territory in Johnston County, but we have not confirmed any of them serving Archer Lodge addresses. We have not confirmed natural gas service in town either. With only about 2% of homes on utility gas, a gas furnace here is the exception. If you have one, it is more likely on propane.

Does Archer Lodge have its own HVAC permit office?
No. The town issues the zoning/land-use approval, and Johnston County Building Inspections in Smithfield issues the mechanical permit and does the inspection. The county lists HVAC change-outs as work that needs a permit.
Is natural gas available in Archer Lodge?
We have not confirmed it. Archer Lodge is not one of the towns Johnston County's economic development office names on the Piedmont Natural Gas laterals, and the Census counts about 2% of homes here heating with utility gas. Most homes are all-electric.
Who is the electric company in Archer Lodge?
The Town of Archer Lodge utilities page names Duke Energy. Some rural Johnston County addresses are on electric co-ops, so check the name on your bill if you are unsure.
