Emergency AC Repair on Barber Mill Road
AC quit on a hot day? Here's what to do in the next ten minutes, and how we handle it.
Short answer
Call (919) 230-4439. We take emergency AC calls 24/7, triage the same day when we have capacity, and charge the same on Sundays as weekdays. Barber Mill Road is in Clayton, where we're based, so it's a short drive; we'll give you a real arrival window on the phone rather than a guess here.
Before you call: four safe checks
- Thermostat. Set to Cool, setpoint a few degrees below room temperature, fan on Auto. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
- Breakers. Check the AC or heat pump breaker in the panel and the disconnect by the outdoor unit. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us.
- Filter. A filter packed with dust can freeze the coil. Swap it if it's dirty.
- Ice or water. If you see ice on the copper lines or water around the indoor unit, turn cooling off and run the fan only until we arrive. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
Shut the system off right away and call if you hear grinding or buzzing from the outdoor unit, smell burning, or see the outdoor fan stopped while the unit hums. Our AC troubleshooting checklist has more detail.
What to tell us so we bring the right parts
Barber Mill Road has a wider mix of houses than most Clayton streets, and that changes what we load on the truck. When you call, tell us:
| Heat pump or AC with a furnace? | County records list 57% of homes on the road with heat pumps and 40% with ducted forced air (usually a gas furnace with a separate AC). The outdoor unit label says which. |
|---|---|
| Townhome, house or manufactured home? | There are 55 townhouse parcels, including Barber Mill Townhomes on Cheltenham Drive, and 19 manufactured homes. Each has a different indoor unit and duct setup. |
| Roughly how old is the system? | The road's biggest building wave was the 1990s. A 1990s system that's never been replaced is due for a different conversation than a newer one. |
| What it's doing | Running but blowing warm, not running at all, outdoor fan stopped, iced up or leaking water. |
Emergency no-cool causes we check first
On a hot afternoon, the usual reasons an AC stops cooling are a failed capacitor (the outdoor fan or compressor won't start), a burned contactor, a frozen indoor coil from low airflow or low refrigerant, a clogged condensate drain that tripped the float switch, or an outdoor fan motor that quit. Most of those we can fix on the first visit when the part is on the truck. We explain what failed and the repair price, and you approve it before we do the work.
On older systems along the road, especially 1990s equipment that may still use R-22 refrigerant, an emergency visit sometimes turns into a repair-or-replace decision. We'll give you both options and get your system cooling again however we can in the meantime.
If it turns into a replacement
An emergency changeout still needs a permit. On Barber Mill Road that's the Town of Clayton for homes in town limits or the ETJ (about three of every four homes), and Johnston County for the rest. Clayton's inspections FAQ says a voicemail on the inspection request line by 4 pm gets next-business-day scheduling, and online requests get priority. We file the permit and schedule the inspection for you.
Nights and Sundays
AC failures don't wait for Monday. We answer 24/7 and don't add a weekend surcharge. Sunday calls are the same price as weekdays. We don't yet have a completed emergency call on Barber Mill Road matched to county records, so there's no job story here yet.

Emergency AC questions on Barber Mill Road
Do you charge extra for emergency AC repair on a Sunday?
No. Sunday and after-hours calls cost the same as weekday calls.
My AC is iced over. What should I do?
Turn cooling off and run the fan only so the coil thaws, check the filter, then call. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
The breaker for my AC keeps tripping. Can I keep resetting it?
Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call us; repeated resets can damage the equipment or point to an electrical fault.
If my system needs replacing in an emergency, do I still need a permit?
Yes. The Town of Clayton issues it for homes in town limits or the ETJ, Johnston County for the rest of the road. We file it for you.
