Which Shotwell are you in?
Shotwell, the community, is a historic settlement in unincorporated eastern Wake County, about 4 miles south of Knightdale and about 6 miles north of Clayton. People have lived there since the early 1800s; the 1818 Oaky Grove house is on the National Register. It is not part of Clayton, and it isn't in Johnston County.
Shotwell Road runs into Clayton in Johnston County, meeting US 70 (now Clayton Boulevard). Clayton annexed several subdivisions along it: Shotwell Station in 2002, Magnolia Pointe in 2003, LionsGate Village in 2005, plus a water tower site, according to the town's annexation history.
This matters most for one thing: who issues your HVAC permit.
Shotwell in Wake County: Wake permits
In unincorporated Wake County, HVAC work is permitted by Wake County Permit and Inspections. A replacement that doesn't need a building permit uses a trade permit through Wake's online portal. The application asks for the appliance type, whether it's gas or electric, and where it sits: outside, in the crawlspace, attic or basement. Shotwell Road in Johnston County: Clayton permits
The Shotwell Road homes we matched in Johnston County records (45 of them) are all in Clayton's extraterritorial jurisdiction. In the ETJ, as in town limits, the Town of Clayton handles HVAC permits, not the county. That's an older, rural mix rather than a single subdivision era. The houses from the 1950s through the 1980s had their central air added or replaced over the years, so duct condition varies a lot from house to house. About 7% still show non-ducted forced air, like a wall or floor furnace. The heat pump and furnace split is close to even, so tell us which you have when you call. We haven't confirmed the build years in Magnolia Pointe or LionsGate Village, so we don't generalize about them.
Utilities
We haven't confirmed the electric or gas provider on either side of the Shotwell name. Near Clayton, the town's public power system and Duke Energy Progress both serve parts of the area; for the Wake County side we have no confirmed provider. Check your bill if it matters to your estimate.
