Short answer

We repair and replace HVAC systems along Covered Bridge Road, from the new Steeplechase and Walton Farm homes to older rural houses. It's in our Clayton backyard, so the drive is short (we haven't timed it; call for today's window). Call (919) 230-4439; same price on Sundays.

Two towns, the county, and the Clayton ETJ

Covered Bridge Road is one of the most split-up roads we serve. Of the 361 homes we matched to it in county records, the jurisdiction breaks down almost evenly:

Who permits HVAC work along Covered Bridge Road
Unincorporated Johnston County, 31%Johnston County Building Inspections
Inside Clayton limits, 27%Town of Clayton
Inside Archer Lodge limits, 27%Johnston County Building Inspections, after Archer Lodge's zoning sign-off. Archer Lodge has no inspections department of its own.
Clayton ETJ, 14%Town of Clayton
Wake County, 9 homesWake County Permit and Inspections

So a neighbor two driveways down can have a different permit office than you. We check your parcel before filing. Clayton annexed much of the road's in-town land in pieces: Riverwood on the Neuse in 1999 ("off of the Covered Bridge Rd intersection"), Cassedale Subdivision and Steeplechase in 2006, Creech Farm at Main, Shotwell and Covered Bridge in 2006, land beside the Neuse in 2011, Walton Farm in 2018, and Ashcroft Section 2 at North O'Neil Street and Covered Bridge in 2022 (221 acres), per Clayton's annexation history.

The newer subdivisions

Steeplechase. Clayton's Town Council approved it in July 2018: up to 600 homes on about 267 acres between City Road, Covered Bridge Road and North O'Neil Street, roughly 161 townhouses along Covered Bridge and 424 or more single-family homes, designed by Shenandoah Homes.

Walton Farm. Annexed in December 2018, developed by Fred Smith Company: 190 single-family homes and 120 apartments, with its main entrance on Covered Bridge Road and a connection to Riverwood Athletic Club through Ravens Ridge.

We haven't confirmed build years house by house in these subdivisions, but both date from approvals in 2018, so their equipment is young. In young systems, the problems we look for first are installation-related: thermostat and backup heat setup, condensate drains, and airflow on two-story plans.

The older side of the road

The rest of the road is much older. County build years run from the 1880s to 2026 with a median of 1998: 100 homes from the 2000s, 68 from the 1990s, 58 from the 2010s and 14 since 2020, but also 33 from the 1980s, 56 from the 1950s through the 1970s and 32 from before 1950. There are 24 manufactured homes.

The assessor lists 58% heat pumps, 35% ducted forced air (usually a gas furnace), 5% non-ducted forced air and 3% with no system listed. The older farm houses are where we expect retrofit ductwork, wall furnaces and the occasional house with no central system at all.

Near the Neuse

Clayton annexed land on Covered Bridge Road next to the Neuse River in 2011. For in-town lots in a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area, Clayton's flood ordinance requires new or substantially improved HVAC equipment and ductwork to sit at least 2 feet above base flood elevation or be flood-proofed. A like-for-like maintenance replacement can stay put. If your lot is near the river, we check the flood map before we quote.

Utilities and our record

We haven't confirmed the electric provider by subdivision on Covered Bridge Road. Clayton's town-run public power serves most in-town customers, but Duke Energy Progress serves some Clayton areas (Riverwood, next door, is Duke). Piedmont Natural Gas serves Clayton; street-level availability isn't confirmed. We also don't yet have a completed job on Covered Bridge Road that matches county records, so there are no job stories here yet.

Services: heat pump service, AC repair, heating repair. Nearby: Riverwood, Shotwell, Archer Lodge, and the Clayton service area.

Covered Bridge Road questions

Is my Covered Bridge Road home in Clayton or Archer Lodge?

It could be either, or neither. County records split the road's homes among Clayton limits, Archer Lodge limits, Clayton's ETJ, unincorporated county, and a few in Wake County. Your tax bill shows which.

Who issues the HVAC permit if I'm in Archer Lodge?

Johnston County Building Inspections, after Archer Lodge's zoning sign-off. Archer Lodge doesn't run its own inspections.

Is Steeplechase new enough that my system is under warranty?

Steeplechase was approved in 2018, so many systems are young. We check the model and serial for warranty status before pricing a major part.

Do I need to raise my HVAC equipment because I'm near the Neuse?

Only for in-town lots in a Special Flood Hazard Area, and only for new or substantially improved equipment: then it must be at least 2 feet above base flood elevation.
