Short answer

Frost Fire Heating And Cooling repairs and replaces heat pumps and central air in Sims and the 27880 area. Sims is about 40 minutes (27 miles) from our Clayton base without traffic, at the far eastern edge of where we work, so we usually book a time window rather than promise a same-hour visit. Call (919) 230-4439; Sundays are billed at the weekday rate.

One of the newest housing stocks we serve

Sims stands out on paper. The Census (American Community Survey, 2024 5-year) estimates:

  • Median year built: about 2009, with a wide margin of error because the town is small
  • 46% of homes built in 2010 or later
  • 99% single-family detached houses, and no manufactured homes counted inside town
  • Heating fuel: about 90% electricity and 10% propane, no utility gas

The surrounding 27880 ZIP is more mixed: a median of about 2002, 9% manufactured homes, and nearly one in four homes (25%) on propane heat.

We don't have Wilson County assessor data for Sims, so this page has no heating-type breakdown like our Johnston County town pages.

Young systems have their own problems

With nearly half the houses built since 2010, many Sims systems are original builder equipment, some now around 15 years old. The things we'd look at first on that kind of system:

  • Warranty status. Many manufacturer parts warranties depend on registration within a set window after install. Find the model and serial number before you call, and we'll check what's still covered.
  • Refrigerant type. Systems from 2010 to about 2024 almost all use R-410A. Under EPA rules, new systems are moving to lower-impact refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. That affects repair cost and parts availability. We tell you which you have.
  • Builder-grade install details. Undersized returns, a condensate line with no trap or float switch, a thermostat wired for the minimum. These cause recurring calls that look like equipment failure.
  • Heat pump backup strips. In an all-electric house, the strips carry the load when the heat pump falls behind. A jump in the winter bill is often the first sign. See aux vs. emergency heat.

Wilson County permit steps

Sims is in Wilson County, not Johnston, so the steps differ from most of the towns on our list:

  1. Zoning from the town. Wilson County's planning division says a zoning permit has to come before a building permit, and that parcels in a town's limits or ETJ get zoning from that town.
  2. County building permit. Wilson County's online permit portal tells Sims applicants to upload their zoning documents with the county Building Permit Application.
  3. Inspection. Inspections are scheduled through the county's online portal. Contact: Wilson County Inspections Division, 252-399-2965 option 2, inspections@wilsoncountync.gov.

We confirm the current routing with the county before every replacement in Sims, since this is a county we don't work in every week.

Electric and gas

Neither is confirmed by a town or utility source. A third-party guide says Duke Energy Progress. Wilson Energy, the City of Wilson's utility, says it serves Wilson County and parts of nearby counties but doesn't list Sims by name. Edgecombe-Martin County EMC, Pitt & Greene EMC and Tri-County EMC have territory in the county. Whoever bills you is who to ask about rebates.

What we do

We handle heat pump repair, AC repair, maintenance and full replacements, and charge the same on Sundays.

Sims, NC FAQ

Do you really come out to Sims?

Yes. It's about a 40-minute drive from our Clayton base, so calling early helps. We haven't completed a job in Sims yet, and we say so plainly.

Who permits HVAC replacements in Sims?

Wilson County. Its planning division says parcels in a town's limits or ETJ get zoning from that town, and a zoning permit must come before a building permit. Wilson County's permit portal has Sims zoning documents uploaded with the county building permit application, and inspections are scheduled through the county's online portal.

Is there natural gas in Sims?

Not confirmed. The Census counts no Sims homes heating with utility gas: about 90% electric and 10% propane.

Who is the electric company in Sims?

We have not confirmed it. A third-party site says Duke Energy Progress, Wilson Energy serves parts of the surrounding counties, and three electric co-ops have territory in Wilson County. Your bill is the reliable answer.
