Some of the oldest houses we serve
Buffalo Road isn't a subdivision. It's a long rural road, and many parcels on it are listed as "not in a subdivision." Flowers Crossroads, where Buffalo Road meets NC 42, is the center of the unincorporated community of Flowers. The new-build subdivisions are next door in Flowers Plantation. On Buffalo Road itself the lots are larger, like a 7.4-acre wooded parcel at 15653 Buffalo Road.
Johnston County records list 141 homes along the road with a median build year of 1967. That's older than almost anywhere else on our Clayton-area pages:

What that housing means for heating and cooling
- More furnaces than heat pumps. 55% of homes have ducted forced air, usually a furnace. On rural roads that can be propane or oil as well as natural gas, and we haven't confirmed whether gas mains run along Buffalo Road. Tell us your fuel when you call.
- Homes without ducts. About 9% show non-ducted forced air (wall or floor furnaces) and 4% list no heating system at all. Adding central heat and air to one of those starts with a duct design, not a unit size.
- Old houses, retrofit ducts. Houses built before central air got their ducts later, often in tight crawlspaces. Leaks and poor returns are common and are worth checking before replacing equipment.
- Manufactured homes. Twenty on the road. They use downflow-style air handlers and under-floor ducts that differ from site-built homes.
Permits: county, Archer Lodge or Smithfield
County records break the 141 homes down as 57% unincorporated Johnston County, 27% in Smithfield's ETJ and 16% inside Smithfield town limits. Northern addresses carry Archer Lodge labels. In practice the permit comes from one office for all of them:
Johnston County Building Inspections handles unincorporated land, and both Archer Lodge and Smithfield rely on the county for building and trade permits; each town's zoning sign-off comes first where it applies. The county lists HVAC change-outs among projects that need a permit, says applications can't be filed online yet, and accepts simple trade permits by email. We take care of it.
Electric and gas
Near Flowers Plantation the power is Duke Energy; a September 2025 outage hit more than 3,000 Duke customers off NC 42 between Buffalo Road and NC 96. South River EMC serves parts of rural Johnston County, so some Buffalo Road parcels may be on the co-op; we haven't confirmed where the line falls. Inside Smithfield limits, the town runs its own electric system. Natural gas along the road isn't confirmed. Your bill is the fastest way to know.

Do you service propane and oil furnaces?

Near Flowers Plantation it's Duke Energy. Other rural parcels may be on South River EMC; check your bill.
